Alagnak River Wildlife

For those who enjoy nature and the outdoors, SW Alaska provides an excellent opportunity to view and photograph many species in their natural wilderness environment.

Bears, moose, and bald eagles are always the main attractions, but the region offers plenty of other species, including caribou, beaver, wolves and over 150 bird species.

Katmai National Park and Preserve, covering over 3.5 million acres, is home to one of the largest concentrations of brown bear in the world. With the location of the Alagnak Lodge on the western edge of the park, bears are commonly seen. In particular they are found scouring the riverbanks or swimming the river during late afternoon and early evening.

Always have your camera ready, whether in the lodge or on the river. The excellent views from the lodge, in particular from the upstairs porches, result in many sightings.

You will long remember seeing brown bears in their natural habitat as one of the highlights of your visit to the Alagnak Lodge.

Moose are seen less commonly than bears, but are often seen swimming the river, or grazing in meadows along the banks.

Finding an eagle often takes no more effort than walking out of the lodge and looking down the long bluff upon which the lodge sits.

Other species that are seen less frequently are caribou and wolves (pictured right).
