ALASKA FLY PATTERNS

Bristol Bay Fishing Flies

Below are some of the fly patterns that work best on the Alagnak River and surrounding area.

For salmon other than sockeye, we are fishing larger attractor patterns. Tube flies work very well, allowing for larger flies to be tied on shorter shank hooks which are harder for the fish to thrash out. They are also extremely reusable since the fly typically slides up the line when the fish is hooked and is therefore undamaged.

Salmon flies can be tied in different colors to suit different species and conditions. The colors you see below are those which generally work best. Sockeye flies are generally sparse.

For rainbows, early season the focus is on large weighted streamer patterns. Later in the summer, egg flies are very effective, typically fished with a floating line and strike indicator. Also very effective later in the summer are flesh patterns with rabbit strips in decaying salmon colors. Deer hair mice can be used to raise large trout.

Grayling are surface feeders, dry flies tied on size #8 to #18 work best.
